Questions and Answers

Read the important questions and answers below to assist you in getting started on the Vodacom Change the World platform.

  • For members of the public who would like to volunteer their skills, time, goods or make a donation
  • For participating non profit organisations
For members of the public who would like to volunteer their skills, time, goods or make a donation
I want to volunteer part time at a non profit organisation (NPO). What do I do?
You can help a non profit organisation (NPO) through contributions of services, goods or cash donations. The search functionality on the Vodacom Change the World website and mobi-site enables you to search for an NPO (known as a 'cause' on the website) or one of their listed projects, by location or by type. Each cause has a dedicated page where you can click on the 'support' tab to choose the type of support that you would like to give.
What are the key attributes of a volunteer?
Responsible and effective volunteers have the following key attributes:
  • Willingness to serve — commitment
  • Ability to serve — time
  • Something of value to contribute — knowledge and skill
  • Professional reputation — ethics, integrity and cooperation
  • Reliability — will assume necessary responsibilities
Is there a difference between a cause and a project?
Yes.  Non-profit organisations (NPOs) that are listed on the Change the World platform are referred to as 'causes'.  Each cause may have specific initiatives for which they may require assistance.  These initiatives are listed as "projects".  Projects can be found on a cause's dedicated page.
I would like to participate in the Vodacom Change the World initiate as a full-time volunteer. How does it work?
Change the World (CtW) is Vodacom's unique initiative that mobilises skilled people to work at a NPO of their choice for a year and get paid a salary. If you've got the passion and skills to make a real difference in your local community you'll need to approach your chosen NPO and gain their support. Agree on a project plan and deliverables for your time with them and submit your application. Applications for the 2013 programme closed on 20 January. For more information go to www.vodacom.co.za/changetheworld.
I want to give my time.  What do I do?
You can view your chosen NPO's list of projects on the website or mobi-site. To find out more about times, location, tasks, etc, we recommend you send your NPO a note via the "Contact Us form". Filling in this form will generate an email to the NPO. Once your email has been sent to the NPO, they will respond to your mail.
Are there any rules that apply to an individual who wish to volunteer at one of the NPOs?
Yes, please read the section Volunteer Code of Good Practice on the website.  Individuals planning to volunteer must behave in a responsible and diligent manner at all times while volunteering.  You need to:
  • Consider and clarify your personal motivations for wanting to volunteer
  • Be clear and honest about your capacity to assist
  • Plan and prepare before arriving at the host organisation
  • Arrive on time and be reliable
  • Act in accordance with the values and goals of the organisation and respect and conform to existing systems and procedures
  • Make sure that whatever it is that you are providing accords with the real needs of the organisation (instead of doing something you want to do but which may not align with the organisation's real needs)
  • Aspire to excellence in whatever volunteering task you undertake
  • Keep an open mind and be willing to respect and learn from the host and community beneficiaries
  • Conduct yourself with dignity, courtesy and consideration
  • Dress appropriately and provide yourself with sun protection, water etc
  • Establish respectful and cooperative relationships with permanent employee and beneficiaries but ensure that professional boundaries are maintained
  • Be accountable for the tasks assigned to you and willing to hear feedback and critique if necessary
  • Ensure care of the property of the organisation and take care to tidy and clean workspace, etc. upon departure
  • Respect those confidences entrusted to you
  • Have due care of your own personal safety
  • Represent the organisation accurately and positively to other organisations and individuals
  • Refrain from smoking while volunteering and do not use alcohol or drugs
  • Enjoy the experience and encourage friends to volunteer too.
I want to give goods.  What do I do?
Please give quality used goods and not goods that are broken or damaged. Resources, staffing and transport to collect donated goods, can be a problem for many NPOs. When deciding to give a donation of books, clothing, non-perishable food, blankets, etc, please try to make it as easy and cost-effective for the NPO to receive your donation. For example, if you want to donate an office desk, but the desk is so big that it requires specialised transport, chances are that the NPO will not be able to pay for that, so unless you can arrange to have it delivered, they will probably not be able to accept your donation.
I am a Vodacom customer and I would like to make a cash donation to an NPO. What do I do?
Vodacom has made it easy for all South Africans to give through a simple SMS - irrespective of which network you belong to. If you decided which NPO you would like to support, simply click on the "Support" link to see what the associated keyword is for the NPO you selected. It is very important that you SMS the keyword when making your donation. Vodacom customers can choose to donate any amount from R5 - R200 in increments of R1 (total payments limited to R200 per month) by sending their chosen NPO's keyword and an amount to 30100. Other network customers can simply SMS your selected NPOs keyword to 42600. SMS's are charged at a fixed amount of R30. You can send multiple SMSs to increase your donation amount.
Are there any additional charges to Vodacom customers who make a donation via SMS?
As a Vodacom customer you are able to donate free of charge with 100% of your donation going to your nominated NPO. Neither Vodacom, the Trust, nor any of our respective agents will deduct or retain any portion of the donation Vodacom customers make using CtW, nor receive any commission, interest, rebate or other profit on any donation.
Are there any additional charges to other network customers who make a donation via SMS?
If you are a customer on another network, applicable fees are paid to the WASP that facilitates the donation. Neither Vodacom, the Trust, nor any of our respective agents will deduct or retain any portion of your donation. 100% of what Vodacom collects from other network operators will be donated to the relevant NPOs.

Can I donate any amount?
If you are a Vodacom customer you may donate any amount between R5 and R200, in increments of R1 (total payments limited to R200 per month). Customers of other networks are able to donate a fixed amount of R30 per SMS. If you wish to donate more than R30 to your chosen NPO, you are welcome to SMS the keyword more than once. For example, if you want to donate R60 to your NPO of choice, you will have to send two (2) SMSs to 42600. This will make your donation R30 (SMS #1) + R30 (SMS #2) = R60.
Are there any additional charges to me from my service provider when I make a donation via SMS?
As a Vodacom customer, the only charge to you is the amount of your donation. For customers from other networks the standard rates of sending an SMS apply.
How is the donation made?
For Vodacom customers, the amount you wish to pay to your selected NPO is deducted from your Prepaid credit or added to your Contract account and transferred by Vodacom to the selected NPO. No refunds are permitted on donations. For other network subscribers, a straightforward deduction of R30 per SMS applies.
Does it make a difference whether I am on pre-paid or on contract?
No. The same process applies. However, if for example you don’t have enough money in your Prepaid account, to make a R20 donation, your account will not be deducted with that amount. We recommend you check your balance and make sure that if you want to donate R20, you have at least R20 available as your balance.
How long before Vodacom transfers donations to the NPO?
Vodacom aims to have all donations paid out to the NPOs on a monthly basis. We will request the NPO to supply us with an invoice whereupon we will make the payments through our Trust account held by Cliffe Decker Hofmeyr Attorneys.
Does Vodacom gain any financial benefit from facilitating the SMS donation service?
Vodacom has no financial gain from facilitating this service. The Vodacom Foundation Trust runs the service as part of the company's Corporate Social Investment programme.
Can I donate to an NPO that is not on the Change the World website?
At this stage donations can only be made to NPOs that are listed on the Change the World platform. If you would like an NPO to be considered for inclusion on the Change the World public participation website in a later phase, that NPO should ensure that they are signed up and listed on the Forgood website.
Does my donation go to a specific project of the NPO I select?
Your donation goes to the NPO of your choice, not a specific project listed on the site. The aim is for your donation to reach the NPO and for them to decide how they want to best utilise your donation, based on their most pressing needs.
Will I be able to obtain a tax certificate from Vodacom?
Vodacom will not issue tax certificates for donations received. This is due to the small amounts relating to individual donations and the administration required to issue tax certificates.

Questions and Answers for participating non profit organisations
How can my NPO become part of Vodacom Change the World (CtW)?
Annually Vodacom offers a select number of passionate and skilled people the opportunity to take a 12 month full-time paid placement with an NPO of their choice. Applications for the 2013 CtW programme closed on 20 January 2013. If you would like an NPO to be considered for inclusion on the CtW participation platform in a later phase of the project, your NPO should apply to be listed on the Forgood website.
What are the requirements for an NPO to be listed on Vodacom CtW?
The NPO must:
  • Be a registered South African NPO or a Section 21/Trust with a PBO number
  • Be in existence for at least 2 years
  • Be able to provide at least one Audited Financial Statement (preferably unqualified)
  • Not be financial distress
  • Not be linked to any government organisation/individual
  • Have 75% of your beneficiaries hailing from previously disadvantaged communities.
  • Have infrastructure and headcount to manage and accommodate volunteers
What is the responsibility of the host NPO?
Host organisations must recognise volunteers as a vital human resource and thus commit to the appropriate systems and infrastructure to ensure effective volunteering contributions. Every NPO planning to use the services of volunteers must have a Volunteer Policy. This Policy should be shared with permanent employees, volunteers, and where appropriate with the beneficiaries of the organisation. When the volunteer arrives she/he must be introduced to permanent employees and the agreed volunteering tasks or role clearly explained to all concerned.
What are the essential elements of a Volunteer Policy?
Vodacom provides NPOs with a draft template of a Volunteer Policy to populate. Depending on the core purpose of your NPO the Policy should include several or all of the following elements:
  • Organisational aims and principles
  • Sufficient and clear information about the organisation, its programmes and projects and its beneficiary community
  • Why the organisation wants to involve volunteers
  • How volunteers will contribute to the organisation
  • How volunteers will be valued
  • Details in regard to the safety of the working environment
  • How paid employee will relate to volunteers
  • Security and screening (necessary especially when volunteers will be involved in childcare; handling of confidential information, etc)
  • Induction and training
  • Support and supervision including one specified person to whom the volunteer will report
  • Expenses
  • Health, safety and insurance
  • Equal opportunities and diversity
  • Confidentiality
  • Problem-solving
Is there a code of practice that applies to individuals who wish to volunteer at our NPO?
Yes, you can find the CtW Volunteer Code of Good Practise on www.vodacom.co.za/changetheworld.

Individuals planning to volunteer must behave in a responsible and diligent manner at all times while volunteering.  They need to:

  • Consider and clarify their personal motivations for wanting to volunteer

  • Arrive on time and be reliable
  • Act in accordance with the values and goals of the organisation and respect and conform to existing systems and procedures
  • Make sure that whatever it is that they are providing accords with the real needs of the organisation
  • Aspire to excellence in whatever volunteering task they undertake
  • Have an open mind and be willing to respect and learn from the host and community beneficiaries
  • Conduct themselves with dignity, courtesy and consideration
  • Dress appropriately and provide themselves with sun protection, water, refreshments etc
  • Establish respectful and cooperative relationships with permanent employee and beneficiaries but ensure that professional boundaries are maintained
  • Be accountable for the tasks assigned to them and willing to hear feedback and critique if necessary
  • Ensure care of the property of the organisation and take care to tidy and clean workspace etc. upon departure
  • Respect those confidences entrusted to them
  • Take due care of their own personal safety
  • Represent the organisation accurately and positively to other organisations and individuals
  • Refrain from smoking while volunteering and do not use alcohol or drugs
  • Enjoy the experience and encourage friends to volunteer too.
How can I add projects to my NPO's page?
Between now and February 2013, you can add projects onto the platform, by obtaining a short project template form from our content editor. Send an email to kerryn@africancommmons.org.za to receive or send your completed template.
What detail should I give to register a volunteer project on the CtW website?
NPOs should contact ctwenquiries@vodacom.co.za and specify:
  • What are the tasks that you need the volunteer/s to do?
  • How much time will these tasks take?
  • Are these tasks 'one offs' or on-going?
  • Will these tasks need more than one person?
  • Are they daytime, evening or weekend?
  • Where will the volunteering happen, on site, off site, e-volunteering?
  • Will the role need specific experience, skills or qualifications?
  • What will the supervision, management and training requirements be?
  • Are there implications for the organisation's insurance?
  • Is the role 'safe', has it been risk assessed?
Can I request more information on the background of the person who applied to volunteer his/her skills and time at my NPO?
Once a volunteer has contacted your NPO, it is the responsibility of the NPO management to determine the suitability of the candidate. We suggest you specially consider:
  • Having a volunteer policy in place
  • Security and screening (necessary especially when volunteers will be involved in childcare; handling of confidential information, etc)
  • Providing the volunteer/s with an induction and training session
  • Providing the volunteer/s with support and supervision including one specified person to whom the volunteer/s will report
How regularly will I get paid my SMS donations received from the public, via this platform?
Vodacom aims to have all donations paid out to the NPOs on a monthly basis. We will request the NPO to supply us with an invoice whereupon we will make the payments.
How can we keep a tab or get a record of what has been donated to our NPO through SMS donations?
Vodacom will send a designated person appointed by your organisation, a monthly email report of the contributions received via this platform.  Remember, that SMS donations from Vodacom subscribers will come to you in full - because Vodacom is waiving the administration fees.  SMS donations from any other network subscribers - i.e. from MTN, CellC, Virgin Mobile or 8Ta, will have a deduction on them to cover the applicable operator administrative costs.
